7:00pm following Vespers at 6:00pm
According to the Scriptures, the glory and image of God are reflected in the human race, created as male and female. In our age, this Christian perspective on sexuality and marriage is regarded as irrelevant, outdated, and overly restrictive.
In the sermons and writings of St. John Chrysostom (347-407), however, we find a clear affirmation of the Scriptural teaching on the relation between the sexes and on the glories of Christian marriage. Dr. David Ford has organized many of St. John’s comments on this subject in his book, Men and Women in the Early Church: The Vision of St. John Chrysostom, and he will be sharing some of St. John’s insights as they relate to contemporary issues, including the question of the differentiation between the sexes. We have much to learn from St. John and other bishops and teachers from the patristic era.
Dr. David C. Ford, an eminent translator of the works of St. John Chrysostom, is Professor of Church History at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, PA. He is the author or editor of six books, and has translated a three-volume set of the writings of St. John Chrysostom, Sing to Your Soul. This will be St. John’s third visit to St. John’s. His talk will be at 7:00pm, following Vespers at 6:00pm, and some light refreshments.
